With almost 4 years in the Pro-AV industry, I have met a lot clients with different requests of the matrix switchers. After learning their request details, I highly recommended the Modular Matrix Switcher rather than a fixed matrix switchers, nearly 95% of them have successfully decided to go with the Modular Matrix Switchers after I explained the 5 reasons as below:

1.You can configure the inputs and outputs accordingly.

Since the chassis is modular chassis design, so you can decide the I/O cards accordingly to your project. Such as you have a FullHD HDMI player, an old VGA computer, a SDI camera.

Modular Matrix Switcher: Choose a proper chassis, have an HDMI, a VGA and a SDI input cards. Problem solved.

Fixed Matrix Switcher: Hummm, some converters will help, but more equipment, more hassles

2.You can have more options on the chassis size from small to large.


The most common fixed Matrix switcher are the 4x4, 8x8, 16x16 and 32x32. However, sometimes you project might not need the equal inputs can outputs, you might need 6 inputs and 12 outputs. So with common version, you will have to pay more for a 16x16 Matrix Switcher. With the modular matrix switcher, you can decide to only buy 6 input cards and 12 outputs.

3.You are able to extend the system if the project changes


With the modular design, you will be able to extend the system if the system want more inputs. Such as you just bought an 8x8, but somehow you got 2 more extra sources? This is will be super easy for the modular Matrix switchers, just a call/an email to order 2 more input cards. For the fixed 8x8, it will be tough decision.

4.You don't need to return the whole unit for repair


No one can promise the gear won't have any issues, except the long or short warranty. An easy maintenance will be very helpful. If ONLY one necessary input port broken.


Modular Matrix Switcher: Send a replacement cards, even you need to shut down, just simply plug out the bad one and plug in the new one. Done


Fixed Matrix Switcher: Contact the factory for the returning address, shut down the system, send the WHOLE unit back, on more week waiting and final get it back with a soonest 2-4 weeks.


5.You can experience the real seamless switching


Most of the Fixed the Matrix Switcher are NOT able to do the seamless switch, you will see black/blue screen while you switch between 2 input sources. However, the with the Modular Matrix Switch, you can have the no black/ blue screen, an instantly seamless switching.
